Graduated.
I had been working towards graduation day for 10 months, and it was a loooooong 10 months. My last year of high school was a constant battle filled with stress, tears, and therapists. I had to punt a lot of projects that I simply didn't have the time or energy to attempt.

Adventures in Film Photography (Yashica 635)
Continuing my adventures in film photography, I borrowed yet another camera from my dad, this one a Yashica 635. The Yashica is a box camera, meaning that the viewfinder flips up, and you look down into it to compose the photo. Unlike the Canon AE-1, the Yashica is full manual, so there was no Automatic setting, aperture priority, or shutter priority.

Memento Mori (Part 1: Carving)
I have a few pieces of jewelry wax that I've been hanging onto for awhile now that I haven't touched. Recently, I've become inspired by those old-timey memento mori jewelry pieces and wanted to bust out the wax and try some lost wax casting for myself. Memento Mori, in case you don't know, is Latin for "remember you must die".

Sewing a Corset
I'm very much tired of looking in vain for bras that fit and are comfortable. I've decided instead to try sewing an everyday corset, meaning that I can make it to my own exact measurements and therefore have something that's guaranteed to fit.

The Gardener
I decided to enter a local art contest where the prompt is "your mental health in 2020" because if there's been one theme for my 2020, it's been mental health. I had never really thought about mental health until this year, but now it's been on my mind a lot. It's hard for me to express in words how I'm feeling, so I tried making a sculpture to represent it.

This is what happens when you give me a lava lamp and photo editing software.

The Flower Wars
If you read the last post, you may or may not have noticed that on one of the journal pages, I referenced a comic titled THE FLOWER WARS that I had completed. THE FLOWER WARS was a project that I undertook when quarantine first started.

Journaling
I recently started my 4th journal, so I thought I should talk about my experiences with journaling. I started back in February 2019, and have since filled up three journals with all sorts of events in my life, both big and small.

Adventures in Film Photography (Canon AE-1)
A few weeks back, my dad gifted me with a film camera. The camera in question is a Canon AE-1 Program that shoots 35 mm film and has shutter priority. I have never owned a camera before and therefore don't have any references to compare it to, but in my humble opinion, I believe it to be an excellent camera.

Night Driving
I made this animation in Procreate because I didn't feel like sleeping. I didn't feel like doing anything, so animating seemed as good an idea as any.

Sunday Boba Bike Club
School has claimed my soul. As is probably apparent by the fact that I haven't posted anything since my comic, distance learning has taken up much of my free time. While I understand the need for online classes, I can't pretend that I like this form of learning and don't miss the social aspect of school.

On Vampiresque Houses
I'm mad at my mom. My mom is a Nebraskan born and raised, and she now wants to return to her hometwon of Omaha when she retires. In the meantime she has been looking at a LOT of houses for sale in Omaha.

Constellation Quilt (Part 1: Preparation)
There's something really comforting about quilts. You'll find them in flea markets and thrift shops: stitched together fragments of color like a kaleidescope, complete with the rips and holes that indicate its repeated use. Whenever I see one I can just imagine the care and hours of work that went into it, the hands that passed over it a hundred times during its making. The result is something to be treasured.

Howdy
My name is Laine and I'm interested in anything and everything. I also have the attention span of a goldfish, which leads for a pretty hectic kinda life. I'm constantly bouncing between projects -- baking a cake one week and hand-embroidering an accurate map of the stars the next. This blog is an attempt to document my ventures into these varied interests as I try to figure my way through life. Enjoy.
